Fred Whitton Challenge

The Fred Whitton Challenge consists of a 112 mile sportive around the Lake District, starting at Grasmere and taking in climbs of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott & Wrynose passes.

As the name suggests, it is run in honour of Fred Whitton. Fred, who died aged just 50 in 1998, was an extremely popular member of the Lakes Road Club.

The very top riders complete the route in just under six hours but eleven hours and over are not uncommon for the average Sportive rider. This is a very tough route and going on rider feedback the hardest one day ride in the UK, the event includes all the Lakeland passes, one with a 30% gradient… and this comes at 98 miles!

Results 2015

Well done to all the Lakes riders who took part this year and to Lofty and his crew for organising another great event.

Craig ‘953’ Steele carried on with his fantastic season so far with 3rd place in a time of 6:06, not far behind the winner which was local fireman Stuart Reid with a time of 5.56. We also had Andy Whalley in the top ten, finishing in a time of 6.22. Five other riders, Kieron, Calum,Darren, Kev and Tony Gregg also came in under 7hrs. Fantastic stuff in tough conditions. There were many great rides from the other club members, Ant Pearson notable for riding London to Paris the weekend before and then completing the Fred in under 8 hrs.

Great stuff everyone! Thank you to Darren for sending in the photos, courtesy of Keith Grafton. There is also a link to ‘Section 10 Motorcycling Photoshere. See if you can pick yourself out!
