Time Trial Update #9
Well, looks like this is the final TT update of the 2018 season (unless anybody sends in any other late results!)
The 1st August saw the running of the BCW 25 mile TT on the demanding Coast Road course. The weather was mixed, with it being overcast and occasional heavy showers, combining with the holiday period leaving a relatively low turnout of 14 riders for the event.
1st place went to Dave Huck with a time of 56:37 – a cracking time for such a tough course. Lakes RC’s Kev Chadwick continued his great run of form, coming in second place less than a minute behind with a time of 57:25 – yet again, another great podium Kev!
Chris Anderson, who wasn’t feeling good on the night, came in 6th place, with a time annoyingly just outside the hour, 1:00:17 – hard luck Chris, but a great ride nevertheless.
The only other Lakes rider taking to the start line was Phil Smith who came in 9th with a time of 1:06:13 (on his road bike) – well done Phil.
A week later on the 8th, the TT action returned to the Haverthwaite 10 course for the running on the ‘road bike only’ TT. The weather was pretty good but was gusty with strong winds in places, making it a tough night.
The event was won by Michael Hall (TBW23) with a time of 22:09. Kev Chadwick came in 3rd with a time of 23:16 – another podium, well done Kev!
Next Lakes rider in was 10th place (from a total field of 24) for Phil Smith with a 25:19. Richard Dion and John lever had a tight midfield battle, with Richard just scraping in front by 4 seconds for 12th with a 25:36, John with a 25:40.
A good ride from Mike Benson saw him record a time of 27:03 for 16th – good ride Mike.
Finally, Chris Anderson didn’t get the memo and turned up on his TT bike (Just kidding, he did get the memo, but just chose to ignore it), and recorded a time of 22:43.
The next event was the BCW 21 on the Coast Road course on the 22nd August – another tough course on what is almost always a tough night – with this evening being no exception.
The wind and holiday period meant a low turnout of 13 riders, but still a high quality field with Dave Huck (BCW) coming out on top with a time of 47:55, with Lakes super vet Kev Chadwick scoring a fine 2nd place with a 48:59. Brilliant consistent performances from Kev week after week, beaten only by super strong lads 20 years his junior.
Mike Benson was the only other lakes RC rider in the event, recording a more than respectable time of 1:03:21 – well done Mike.
The following week saw the BCW run a Coast Road 10, on another windy night. The fastest rider on the night was Michael Hall (TBW23) with a fast time on the hilly course of 22:54, over a minute ahead of 2nd placed rider Stuart Garnett (BCW).
1st Lakes rider home was Jack Talbot, going well as ever with a time of 24:47 – good ride Jack.
The young Stephenson brothers both rode – with Sam coming out on top with a fine 25:33 for 7th place, with Tom coming in 12th with a 26:37, 2 seconds and one place behind Phil Smith – well done lads!
Steve Morrison also turned out for a late season spin, recording 27:00 for 15th.
Last but not least, Mike Benson recorded a time of 32:49 for 31st place = good effort Mike.
The last event of the season was the BCW Coast Road 10 with a twist – fancy dress, so a bit of fun. Mike Benson was the only Lakes RC rider present – recording a time of 31:43 for 7th place and beating his time for the previous week (!) – so I don’t know what costume you were wearing Mike, but faster than your cycling kit!
As ever, thanks to the Barrow Central Wheelers for promoting these events and to all the helpers and riders who marshal them – including the Lakes riders who do their bit by marshalling some events throughout the year, and of course, to all the riders for turning up.
