Millom School C2C Cycle Challenge

Millom BeSpoke BikingTM was formed in November 2014 as a cycling based life enrichment project for pupils in the Millom area.

Although it is an after school club, it is entirely self-supporting and self-funded. It uses cycles donated by the local community and local cycle clubs, which club members assess, repair and ride.

The goal this year was for 12 pupils to ride the C2C on bikes they had effectively repaired or built themselves.

In the end we actually took 14 teenagers, both girls and boys aged from 12 to 16,and cycled the C2C earlier this month. A 130 mile trip taken over 5 days, with daily mileages ranging from 22 to 37 miles.

The numbers required that the group had to stay at campsites, so as well as cycling the teenagers had to set up camp every evening and break camp each morning.

As anyone who has cycled the C2C will tell you, the terrain can be challenging, and the route takes in both Hartside Fell and the severe climbs around Allenheads, avoiding main roads for the majority of the trip.

All participants excelled on the trip, and it was a life enhancing, if not a life changing trip for all of them. They all had to push themselves, both physically and mentally, to make this achievement.

There are not many 12-16 year olds who can say that they have cycled across the whole of the UK.

None of this would have been achieved without the support by you, the members of the Lakes Road Club and Barrow Central Wheelers who, in some instances, have donated complete bikes.

Everyone at Millom BeSpoke BikingTM would like to say a very big “Thank You” for all your support and assistance.

You have truly made a difference to the lives of a number of young people, and the trip is something that they will remember for the rest of their lives.

There is a photo montage of the trip attached and photo`s can also be viewed at the Millom School website.
